Abstract

As the in-orbit fleet of INTELSAT satellites continues to grow, it has become imperative to expand the automation of the spacecraft control and house keeping functions to increase flexibility and reliability of satellite operations. In order to safely and efficiently manage and operate a large number of satellites in orbit and to provide optimum communications service to its costumers, INTELSAT has decided to expand onboard automation of the satellite house keeping tasks. This on-board automation is currently being implemented in the Spacecraft Control Electronics (SCE) of the Intelsat VII/VIIA series. This paper provides a description of the SCE architecture and the functions performed by the on-board processor system, together with the hardware and firmware design structure and the SCE testing philosophy.
