Abstract
The ever-increasing space debris population has become a major concern for the space industry in the last decades.Recent newcomers in the space industry collectively, known as NEWSPACE, have further exacerbated the problem by multiplying the number of launches and deployed space objects per year, as well as the number of space operators. A sustainable space debris environment will be possible only with adequate and responsible operators following internationally agreed rules of conduct. This article will present the state of art of space sustainability rating and label initiatives. It will also highlight the innovative debris mitigation techniques and recommendations that should be implemented by satellite operators and manufacturers.
