Abstract
The successful launch in May 1967 of ARIEL 3, the first satellite to be designed and wholly constructed in the United Kingdom, was an outstanding event for this country's space science programme. Five experiments and their supporting facilities were carried aloft by a US SCOUT launch vehicle and inevitably the reputation of our aerospace and electronic industries rode with them.
