Abstract

The author develops a mathematical model to explain and predict the morphology of thermokarst lake plains, which has applications for the interpretation of such areas on space imagery. It is determined that the spatial distribution of lakes can be regarded as random, and described by a Poisson distribution, whereas variations of lake diameters can be represented as a Wiener random process for the values of their logarithm. Interpretation keys are proposed for use in structural geology and engineering geology based on the patterns identified.
