Abstract

The emittance growth in magnetic phase compressors under the influence of the space charge has been investigated through calculations using the PARMELA code. Several mechanisms contributing to this emittance growth have been clearly identified. They result in a partial loss of achromaticity in bending lines correlated to the electron-energy distribution along the bunch. As a consequence, the emittance growth is markedly higher when the bending line is used as a phase compressor.
