Abstract

To the Editor.— The excellent commentary by the Committee on Nutrition of the American Academy of Pediatrics on soy-protein formulas1 needs an addition to the instances when soy-protein should not be used. Soy-protein may be harmful in cystic fibrosis of the pancreas as the protein is contaminated with trypsin inhibitors which can aggravate the pancreatic insufficiency and interfere with absorption of protein resulting in hypoalbuminemia and its manifestations.2-4 I think this addition will remind pediatricians that soy-based formulas are not recommended for patients with cystic fibrosis.
