Abstract
The author discusses the importance — symbolic and technical — of space shuttles to the US and Soviet space programmes. Contrary to various critics, he believes that the Buran-Energia system has recaptured the public imagination and that thanks to greater versatility than its US counterpart, it can accelerate progress in the Soviet space programme and stimulate spin-offs. The growing spirit of glasnost in the programme is welcomed and an increasing openness expected.
