Soviet Holiday Calendar: Ways of Formation and Transformation (on Materials of the Arkhangelsk North of the First Third of the 20th Century)

Abstract

The article examines one of the most important turning points in the history of the country during the change of the political system, economic and cultural life. For the author, it is interesting to study the process of formation of Soviet holidays, the period when new social and artistic forms were being searched for, new ritual actions were being formed, traditional calendar holidays of Russians of the Arkhangelsk North were being updated or displaced from everyday life. The research is based on field materials collected by the author in the cities and villages of the Arkhangelsk region in 2003–2012. Materials containing factual data, local periodicals, archival documents of the GAAO (State Archive of the Arkhangelsk Region), the Mezen Regional Historian E. Podnebesnikova Foundation are also involved.
