Abstract

During the spring of 1983, I had the opportunity to participate in a NAACOG sponsored tour of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). Most of the 33 tour members were nurses interested in learning about health care provided to the maternity client in the USSR. Prior to the trip, reading materials specific to Soviet health care were provided. During the two-week trip, the capital cities of five of the 15 republics in the Soviet Union were visited: Moscow, Russia; Tbilisi, Georgia; Erevan, Armenia; Baku, Azerbaidzhan; and Kiev, Ukraine. The visits provided an opportunity for the tour participants to interact with Soviet health-care providers. The travel to such diverse areas of this massive country permitted an assessment of Soviet lifestyle in general. Time was also provided for the American nurses to share what they learned with one another.
