Abstract

This article presents information on clinical laboratory practice in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). The basis for the observations reported here was the participation by the author in a Soviet-American conference on medical technology that took place in the Soviet Union during the fall of 1984. Information on the general organization of the Soviet health care system is presented as well as an overview of the educational preparation of individuals to work in clinical laboratories. Personal impressions and reactions obtained during the conference and professional site visits are, of course, subjective. Also included is an assessment of those components of the Soviet system that might apply to the American clinical laboratory.
