Abstract

Dawid Venter's Directory of South African Sociology departments is used to build up a description of departmental characteristics for 1996/7. Course programmes, staff characteristics (including rank and proportion holding PhDs) are covered, together with student numbers at various levels and student/staff ratios. Staff interests are described and questions raised about the implications of this data for the future development of Sociology in South Africa.
