Abstract

Abstract The inauguration of President Mandela marked a new era in South Africa's foreign policy. The question is posed whether South Africa will set out to be a regional superpower or turn its back on the continent. An alternative to either is that South Africa will assume a leadership role, in particular making substantial contributions to conflict prevention and resolution in the region and further afield.
