Abstract
The south-eastern Alpine region with its characteristic hilltop settlements exhibits a great degree of self-sufficiency and profound changes from the lowland Roman way of life in the 5th-7th c., but recently typological and archaeometric analyses of glass have shown that it was nevertheless at least partly still embedded in the Mediterranean world and trade networks. We will be presenting a discussion of the efforts that went into natural and artificial church illumination and equipment in the otherwise very modest ecclesiastical buildings.
