Indexes of library materials prices are indicators of the changes in the prices of publications purchased by libraries. By means of literature review, this article will define price indexes; give a short history of the American book and periodical price index; describe the Library Materials Price Index Committee and the ANSI standard on price indexes for library materials; comment on foreign price indexes, local price studies, and commercial price studies; report on related publishing studies and sources of current awareness in this field of research; and make observations on the limitations of price indexes and the need for their further refinement.
