Industrial inspection often calls for ultrasonic techniques, but this could mean putting sensitive equipment either in a hostile environment or in a stainless steel box. Neither approach is satisfactory, in the latter case because a metal–liquid interface represents a mismatched boundary and typically only 12% of the energy is transmitted.
