Abstract

Abstract We review the theory of sound propagation near structural phase transitions of 2nd order. These can be divided into (i) Distortive Phase Transitions, with a soft optic mode, (ii) Elastic Phase Transitions, with an acoustic soft mode or no soft phonon for shear or isostructural transitions respectively.
