Abstract

The sorption of water by ethylene-propylene-diene elastomer SKEPT-40 and ts compositions with rubber accelerators is studied by sorption, interference, turbidity, and spectral methods. It is established that there is no sorption equilibrium in the region of high vapour activity ( p/ p s⩾0·9) and on swelling in water. The continuous sorption process is accompanied by a change in the phase composition of the polymer-impurity-water system. The coefficients of diffusion indicating water sorption and the diffusional coalescence of the particles of dispersed phase of aqueous solution in the elastomer matrix are determined from the kinetics of water sorption, the change in turbidity, and the phase decay kinetics.
