Abstract

Ocular sonography is a useful adjunct to a thorough history and eye examination when evaluating patients with acute ocular complaints. It may be used to determine which patients require immediate ophthalmologic consultation and treatment. Ultrasound can provide additional information when the patient cannot cooperate with a fundoscopic examination or when severe edema, chemosis, or hyphemas are present. Ultrasound is helpful when evaluating patients in the emergency department and intensive care unit. Ocular sonography can improve patient care by providing the physician with a tool for rapid assessment of the eye with minimal discomfort and without radiation exposure.
