Abstract
The sound levels produced by residential high-fidelity sound systems are of considerable importance in architectural acoustics. For example, partitions between quality apartments should provide sufficient acoustical separation so that neighbors are not annoyed even when listeners to serious music play their systems as loudly as they wish. Also, designers of auditoriums should be concerned if listeners to recorded music are becoming accustomed to sound levels significantly different from those experienced in typical concert halls. We have determined the statistical distribution of the sound levels of serious music that several listeners with high-quality disk-playback equipment considered “normal” for their tastes. The measured values are presented and their implications discussed.
