Abstract

Complexes of Ni(II), Pd(II), Cr(III), Co(III) and Fe(III) with ethyldiselenoxanthogenate (C 2H 5CSe 2 = sexaant), were synthesized and their spectroscopic properties studied. M(II) L 2 and M(III) L 3 species are monomeric, non-electrolytes, soluble in organic solvents; their electronic spectra are typical of the corresponding metallic octahedral and square-planar chromophores. In the octahedral complexes the Δ value of sexant is higher than the Δ values of the diselenocarbamates and diselenophosphates, in accordance with the spectrochemical series of the corresponding sulfur-containing ligands. Besides the ligand bands, the u.v. spectra show some charge-transfer bands, which confirm a χ opt value for selenium-containing ligands of about 2·5.
