Abstract

In this paper, we develop some techniques for three- dimensional Doppler weather radar data processing. These techniques are mainly used for Doppler weather radar data preprocessing, data resampling, data storage, and data visualization. A median filter is employed to remove data singularity and make data smooth. Radar data in the spherical coordinate system is transformed into data in the Cartesian coordinate system. A method of three linear interpolation is proposed for computing the value in the new position of resampled radar data. In fact, triple linear interpolation is constituted of two double-linear data interpolations subsequently on the up- and down-face of scanned data cone and one linear data interpolation along the radial. All radar echo signal are organized into 16 levels for reducing the overload of storage. Radar meteorology knowledge is utilized in recognition and quantization of convection cells. Z is enlarged purposefully to match X for legibility of radar images. Three-dimensional radar data is visualized by Interactive Data Language (IDL) programming. It turns out that the Doppler weather radar data processing system (DWRDPS) can support weather forecasters to interpret meteorological phenomena more effectively.
