Abstract

Narrow elongated transmission electrode sets of a parallel plate avalanche counter (PPAC) with an active of 80 cm 2 are subject of the experimental analysis. The PPAC electrical properties are investigated at n-heptane pressures from 5 to 30 Torr and at electrode spacings of 1 to 4 mm. The n-heptane dielectrical strength under a uniform electrical field is considered with respect to conditions existing in the counter. A method for electrical strength estimation of transmission avalanche counters is presented. Besides, factors affecting the experimental electrical strength characteristics are investigated in detail. The curves were obtained with various electrode sets of the PPAC. Mechanical imperfections of electrodes, the electrostatic interaction between the transmission portions of the electrodes, the influence of the electrode type upon electron regeneration, and the space charge effect are discussed.
