Abstract

The results of some spectroscopic measurements on rhenium(V) chloride are discussed. The reactions of this chloride with either sulphur dioxide or arsenic(III) oxide lead to mixtures of rhenium(VI) oxide tetrachloride and rhenium(III) chloride. With anhydrous tin(II) chloride the pentachloride is quantitatively reduced to the trichloride. The pentachloride is reduced by 2,2′-bipyridyl(bipy) to give ReCl4(bipy), and ammonolysis occurs with liquid ammonia to give [ReCl3(NH2)2,2NH3]n. The oxopentabromorhenate(V) ion results from the reaction of the pentachloride with 48% hydrobromic acid.
