Abstract

This chapter presents Legendre functions. Heine first proved that the associated functions are a special case of the spherical Legendre functions, though in the literature, they are sometimes called cone functions and also Mehler functions. Interest in the Legendre functions with complex index has grown in connection with the wide use in mathematical physics of methods of integral transforms. The tabulation of Legendre functions with complex index was started comparatively recently.
