Abstract

1. We have considered the special aspects involved in determining heat resistance by using samples in the form of solid discs and cylinders. 2. We have obtained equations for calculating the mode factor and a quantity allowing for the form of the stress distribution in the Weibull equations in the case of the sharp heating of a solid disc or cylinder. 3. We have considered the special features involved in comparing the strength and heat resistance of materials differing substantially in homogeneity. 4. We have compared the results of calculations based on the proposed equations with exper imental data secured in annular samples of various sizes. The experimental results relating to the determination of heat resistance may most conveniently be expressed in the form of a criterion which allows for the statistical character of the strength of brittle materials.
