Abstract

Armco iron, copper, aluminium, brass and steels were employed in this study. Steels were treated to various microstructures and strength levels. The true stress-true strain curves are determined by rolling edge diametrical extensometer. The result shows that the strain hardening curve can be divided into three straight line sections in lgσ-lgε plot and each section agrees with Hollomon's equation. The hardening exponent n1. of the first stage is sensitive to the matrix, the hardening exponent n2 of the second stage and the knee strain ε1 from n1 to n2 are both influenced by the second phase. Actually, the relation n=εu is not true, even though it can be deduced fromσ=kε and dσ/dε=σ . It is better to use the approximate relation n2= εu when ε1 < εu < ε2. The existence of the third stage of strain hardening is probably an important phenomenom worth studying.
