Abstract

A scanning electron microscope has been used to examine the fracture surfaces of specimens of an epoxy resin reinforced with brittle alumina whiskers or with ductile copper wires. Differences in fracture behaviour are evident, and lead to some general conclusions on the ductility of brittle matrix-ductile fibre composites.
