Abstract

The relation between the charge dependence of the entropy of a monolayer or multilayer of solvent molecules against a charged wall and the temperature dependence of the potential difference across this layer is demonstrated on the basis of general statistical-mechanical considerations. The conditions under which this entropy coincides with the corresponding configurational entropy are pointed out. The solvent contribution to the entropy of formation of an ion-free interphase is shown to be related to a “surface excess” of the potential difference across the interphase. The potentialities of monolayer models in interpreting the charge dependence of the entropy of formation of the interphase are critically examined.
