Abstract

An empirical method of evaluating the quality of raw dolomite for use as tar bonded semi-stable dolomite, completely stable dolomite or for use as fettling material has been discussed based on the true density and loss on ignition of raw dolomite. On the basis of chemical analysis and taking into consideration the percentage of silica and insolubles, lime and magnesia a quality index for each dolomite has been worked out. Based on the quality index several grades of raw dolomite have been suggested and their suitability for different uses has been indicated. Data collected from different steel plants show that the dolomite raw materials at present used in the steel furnaces fit well with the classification suggested in this paper and also that this index can be used for the quality control of raw dolomite.
