Abstract
hile voids in critical regions of irreversible hydrocolloid impressions are annoying, air entrapment is often difficult to avoid. Vacuum-mixed irreversible hydrocolloid is considered to provide a better impression for gypsum than irreversible hydrocolloid mixed in an open container, based on the fact that irreversible hydrocolloid laboratory specimens-when mixed by both methods and subsequently compared-show a dramatic difference in air inclusion. Recently, a mechanical mixing device (Cadco Alginator, Cadco Dental Products, Los Angeles, Calif.) used without vacuum has been advocated for mixing irreversible hydrocolloid and is purported to be advantageous for impression making because of reduced air inclusion within the body of the irreversible hydrocolloid. This device simply rotates the mixing bowl so that a spatula may be pressed laterally to reduce air pockets. The present study was undertaken to compare properties between handmixed (HAND), alginator mixed (MECH), and vacuum-mechanically (VACMECH) mixed irreversible hydrocolloid.
