Abstract

A hollow-cathode magnetron ion source, based on a new type of hollow-cathode discharge [V. Miljević, Phys. Lett. A 92, 439 (1982); V. Miljević, VI ESCAMPIG, Oxford (1982), p. 123; V. Miljević, VII ESCAMPIG, Lisbon (1984), p. 166], is presented. This ion source has all the good characteristics of a conventional magnetron ion source [B. Cobić et al., Nucl. Instrum. Methods 24, 358 (1963)], but in addition, it provides very effective axial ion extraction from a cylindrical mesh hollow cathode [V. Miljević, Rev. Sci. Instrum. 55, 121 (1964)]. In this study a special type of ion extraction is used.
