Abstract

The behaviour of iron(III) oxide, α-Fe 2O 3, as a possible adsorbent in gas chromatography has been investigated, the activity being studied as a function of conditioning temperature. Variations in surface activity caused by water in the carrier gas, and also by very thin films of polyethylene glycol 20M deposited on the adsorbent, are described. Examples of separations of alkanes, alkenes, cycloalkanes, aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, esters and ketones are reported.
