Abstract

Age-related changes lead to an increase in skin problems and around 70% of older people have a treatable skin condition ( Jordan, 2002 ). Skin conditions may be caused by the older person having difficulty caring for their ageing skin. Sometimes other conditions, such as flea bites, scabies and bed bugs may be mistakenly diagnosed as eczema. This article, one of a series, uses a case study approach to outline how an 86-year-old lady with infected flea bites benefited from a holistic approach to treatment. It explains how what initially appeared to be treatment failure was a mixture of healthcare beliefs and memory difficulties, and outlines how these were addressed and how her home and pet were treated to eliminate a flea infestation.
