Abstract

Abstract A comparative quantitative study of the solvent effect on the photophysical properties of two cationic thiazine dyes (azure A, and methylene blue) was carried out at room temperature. The electronic absorption and emission spectra of the dyes were recorded in various organic solvents with different polarity. The spectral behavior of the dyes was also investigated in a high polar anisotropic medium (nematic mixture of 1751). In addition, using the solvatochromic methods, the ground and the excited states dipole moments of the dyes were estimated from Lippert–Mataga, Bakhshiev, Kawski–Chamma–Viallet and Reichardt equations. The spectral data were analyzed by the Katritzky and Kamlet–Taft multi-parameter scales. Finally, dichroic ratio and degree of anisotropy of these dyes in a liquid crystalline host were investigated by measuring the intensity of the absorption bands in the visible region of parallel-aligned samples.
