Abstract

Steel-concrete composite columns offer a number of benefits and are often used in multistorey buildings and industrial structures. In this paper the fire performance of high strength concrete-filled steel hollow structural section (HSS) columns is presented for various types of concrete filling. A comparison is made of the fire resistance performance of HSS columns filled with normal strength concrete (NSC) and high strength concrete (HSC). The factors that influence the behaviour of HSC-filled HSS columns, under fire conditions, are discussed and solutions are suggested for enhancing fire resistance of these columns.
