Abstract

A solution to the Schrodinger equation for a particle moving in a two-well potential is obtained based on a variational method. This potential represents the sum of the harmonic and Gauss components. An analytical expression for the wave function of the ground state of the particle is derived. The dependence of the solution obtained on the potential barrier height and width is investigated. It is shown that the stronger the potential barrier, the higher the accuracy of calculations. The parameters of the two-well potential are indicated at which good agreement between the results of calculations and the exact numerical solution of the Schrodinger equation are expected.
