Abstract

CHL is widely used for the treatment of super-ficial eye infections and, because of its low cost and recognized efficacy, it is one of the most popular antibiotics in developing countries. Its mechanism of action has been elucidated and found to rely on the inhibition of peptidyl transferase, an RNA enzyme that catalyzes peptide bond formation between adjacent amino acids during protein synthesis.
