Abstract

Present study introduces SolidStir® as an integrated solid-state manufacturing technique for extrusion of rods, wires, tubes, and metal-matrix composites with an additional additive manufacturing (AM) capability. The technology has the advantage of using plug-and-play components to enable multiple end products. The extrudates benefit from an equiaxed, and refined microstructure (∼15 µm). AM of Al-15Ce-3Zr alloy showed severe particle breakdown and exhibited better mechanical properties (∼27 % and ∼900 % increase in strength and ductility) compared to the as-cast counterpart. Leveraging the advantages of solid-state manufacturing, this work establishes SolidStir® as a unique solution for modular manufacturing far and beyond the frontiers of earth.
