Abstract

Solid state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a powerful analytical tool in support of geochemical research. This chapter targets geochemists unfamiliar with solid state NMR and provides practical information regarding gaining access to NMR, consideration of key experimental parameters, and an introduction to the hardware of a solid state NMR. Twenty five isotopes with geochemical significance are identified. Practical issues related to applying solid state NMR to each of these isotopes are detailed and examples of geochemical applications for these isotopes are presented. Frontier and emerging areas of solid state NMR are presented in context of future geochemical applications. Selected resources and brief descriptions of these are listed for broader understanding of the physics of solid state NMR. References focus primarily on published geochemical applications of solid state NMR.
