Abstract

The formation of a complete series of solid solutions in the SrBi 2 Ta 2 O 9 -Bi 3 TiNbO 9 system with a general formula of (SrBi 2 Ta 2 O 9 ) 1-x (Bi 3 TiNbO 9 ) x has been confirmed. X-ray diffraction was used to study the gradual change in diffraction patterns and lattice parameters with the change of the x value. Curie temperatures for all compositions of the solid solution vary linearly as a function of the x value. The sintering behavior of the single phase powders of the solid solution was studied. It has been found that with the increase of x value the relative density and average grain size of sintered bodies are increased. The microstructure of the solid solution materials was investigated by using atomic force microscopy. It is suggested that the major mechanism for the sintering and grain growth of the solid solution is solid state diffusion.
