Abstract

ABSTRACT In this research, effect of impingement angle on solid particle erosion has been performed on direct metal laser sintering processed SU718 material. This study includes heat treatment and surface quality to resist in solid particle erosion. The air jet erosion was conducted at a velocity of 250 m/s and impact angle of 15°, 30° and 45° at room temperature. The erosion rate was highly influenced by the hardness of the direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) alloy, and the erosion rate was found to be low for HT 1 DMLS alloy. Based on the results, it has been concluded that the erosion rate was found to increase linearly from 15° to 45°. With the increase in the impingement angle, the erosion scar area has increased. The erosion morphology of the samples has been experimented through SEM image analysis and erosion mechanism. Cutting experimentations were executed to inspect on ploughing and micro-cutting in all impact angles, whereas in addition to the above results, erodent impingement was found in the bare DMLS alloy. Also, good erosion resistance was observed for HT 1 DMLS alloy in all the impact angles.
