Naval Engineers JournalVolume 76, Issue 1 p. 147-150 SOLID CONSUMABLE INSERT RINGS IMPROVE SHIP RIDE WELD QUALITY HELMUT THIELSCH, HELMUT THIELSCH The Author has been with the Grinnell Company since January, 1954. He is in charge of the Industrial Piping Laboratory concerned with research and development of procedures for the fabrication, bending and welding of piping, with the investigation of service failures, with metallurgical consultation and with the manufacture of insert rings and of other welding and inspection products. He is also responsible for the Company's fabrication and welding procedure specifications, shop and field inspection procedures and the adoption of new fabricating and field welding techniques. As a member of various ASTM, AWS, ASME and other technical and code-writing committees, he has kept in close contact with the latest techniques in welding and in weldment and pipe fabrication. Previous to 1952 he was associated with the Welding Research Council where he prepared extensive literature reviews and interpretive reports covering a wide range of subjects pertaining to the welding field. Some of his earlier experiences include metallurgical and engineering responsibilities with Allis Chalmers Mfg. Co., Black, Sivalls & Bryson, and the Lukens Steel Company. He holds several patents and has authored over eighty technical and research articles on various subjects involving welding, fabrication, inspection and metallurgy. He has also contributed chapters to the ASME and AWS Handbooks, and to the Piping Handbook. He is a member of the AWS, ASM, ASME, ASTM, ACS, NACE and SNT technical societies.
