Abstract

The ZCS bidirectional buck boost converter for energy storage applications is a soft switched bidirectional converter with main switches, resonant capacitors and resonant inductors. ZCS or Zero Current Switching is a soft switching technique used to reduce the switching stresses. Switching stresses causes loss and to reduce this switches are turned on and off at zero current or zero voltage instants. In bidirectional buck boost converter the buck mode as well as the boost mode can be operated with bidirectional current and power flow capability. Renewable energy can be effectively utilized by having a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) as the energy generation is not constant. The system can be mainly used for battery banks, electric vehicles etc. and also where there will be an application of both renewable and non renewable resources. Photo Voltaic panels are to be used as one of the input. The generated energy is stored in a BESS. This creates an energy management system. The bidirectional converter creates an interface between these exchanges. With the converter, the use of the stored energy can be done easily and when needed. To control the working of the bidirectional converter a control system has to be implemented.
