Abstract

The activities of the Solar Powered Irrigation System project have been organized and the participants are working on the project. The demonstration system has been sized, component specifications written, and the collector system purchased. The cost of the collectors was lower than estimated. This, combined with the selected site well characteristics, allowed system performance to be increased to approximately 800 gallons per minute of water pumped and the pump will run for approximately 24 hours per day. The project activities permit separation of the water pumping from the agricultural experiments and allows the most efficient use of each. Sandia Laboratories is responsible for the pumping of the water and New Mexico State University is responsible for the water-application as part of the agricultural experiments.
