Abstract

The availability of drinkable water will be a significant problem after 20–25 years from today in Sri Lanka. Everyone living on planet Earth is on the verge of facing a drinking water crisis shortly. Only 1% of Earth’s water is in a fresh, liquid state, and nearly all of this is polluted by both diseases and toxic chemicals. For this reason, the purification of water supplies is essential.Keeping these things in mind, we have designed an innovative model that will convert dirty/saline water into pure drinkable water using a renewable energy source (i.e., solar energy). The main motive was to provide a reliable solution to the drinking water shortage using a renewable energy source—the developed model function by harnessing solar thermal and photovoltaics. The heat is transferred using radiation, convection, and conduction. The results are obtained by evaporation of the saline water and collecting it as pure drinkable water.The designed model produces 265 ml of pure water from 1292 ml of dirty water for seven hours. The plant has an average water purification rate of 70.6 ml per hour per square meter.
