Abstract

Abstract The paper discusses the advantages of sensible heat storage using rocks. A brief survey of previous work done in this field is also presented. A well-insulated wooden bin with different rock sizes and different air flow rates was used to study the characteristics of the storage experimentally; results are compared with other reported studies. It is shown that due to the temperature stratification along the pile axis, the major portion of the stored heat can be recovered at a temperature very close to the maximum storing temperature. This shows that the rock pile may be successfully used for solar energy storage.
