Abstract

A 36-year record (1951–1986) of global solar radiation is used in the production of a meaningful solar radiation map for Nigeria presented in this paper. Thirty experimental stations established in 1982 by the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI), to measure the hourly and daily global solar radiation on horizontal surfaces and 20 stations of the Nigerian Meterological Office with records of global solar radiation from 1951 were analysed. The iso-radiation lines are drawn from the Institute (NBRRI) five-year record (1982–1986), the estimated solar radiation from empirical formulae using meteorological data and the converted solar radiation data from the Meteorological Office (1951–1986). The solar radiation maps of Nigeria are produced for the maximum, minimum, yearly average and the mean monthly global solar radiation for all the months in the year using the 36-year average.
