Abstract
AbstractVolcanic ash, emitted by Irazú volcano in Costa Rica during 1963 and 1964, was evaluated for its agricultural value. The evaluation included leaching loss studies in lysimeters and measurements of nutrients extracted with various solutions. The CEC of the ash is about 1.85 meq/100 g, and its pH in water is 5.1; it contains little soluble or exchangeable Mn. Lysimeter experiments showed that Irazú ash does not fix phosphorus or retain cations added as fertilizers. The ash is wettable and forms, when wetted, a thin, hard, cemented surface crust.
