Abstract

Very often, software developers spend too much time working on a program's “nuts and bolts” and too little time working on its “user friendliness”. This is especially true of technical software. In the developer's zeal to make sure that every technical detail is perfect, he fails to consider the user who may not even know the difference between source files, object files and executable files. Recently a software package was purchased for the Cleveland State University engineering VAX computer. The program was expected to be used by the Engineering College's students and faculty. Although this particular package was technically excellent, it was cumbersome to use. The intent of this paper is to describe the author's efforts to improve the user interface of this program. In addition to the description of the project, a general set of guidelines will be presented to aid software designers in creating user friendly software. Explanations of device drivers, the use of .COM files and spawning will also be given for those unfamiliar with these terms.
