Abstract

AbstractDetail and assembly illustrations show how the apparatus has been redesigned to maintain a constant rate of heat transmission. A description of the comparator telescope and the method of use is given. Individual curves show the results of softening‐point tests on glasses over a range of 260°C., in which the agreement for five individual homogeneous glass specimens varies from 1° to 6°C. when the ordinary portable potentiometer is used. When the glass contains stones or is devitrified, the results are more widely divergent. Uniformity of specimen diameter has a slight effect on the results.
